About
I have been a designer for more than four decades. After earning an art degree, I worked for many years as a graphic designer and would-be illustrator. Coming from a family of writers and editors, it was inevitable that I would gravitate toward the design of words and text. So eventually I turned my attention to book design, which frankly suited my temperament and talents much better.
All that experience has deeply informed my past 25 years as a type designer. I love nothing better than a handsome, well-set page of text, and the design of text typefaces remains my primary focus.
My first typeface, Whitman, was published by the Font Bureau, with whom I also spent many years designing specimens and performing font testing and production. I have provided design and production assistance for Matthew Carter, adding language expansion and writing OpenType features, and I contributed guidance on Latin typography to Morisawa Inc. of Japan, for whom I designed the Latin, Cyrillic, & Greek components of their extensive Clarimo family of fonts.
Over the years, I have created custom fonts for both newspapers and magazines. Several styles of Whitman Display and Whitman Banner were commissioned by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal, and Fortune magazine. More recently, I designed the Haffner Text font family for TIME magazine’s 2015 redesign, followed by Haffner Display for the 2021 refresh.
I live in a small rural town in western Massachusetts, surrounded by state forest, with my wife (an artist, gardener, & beekeeper) and our two crazy pugs.

This website currently uses Haffner Text and Parling fonts throughout. I may incorporate other in-progress typefaces from time to time.
All of the content was created by humans with human intelligence; no A.I. So any hallucinations are entirely my own. (And yes, I am fond of em dashes. Always have been.)
I had two indispensable collaborators. The site design & development was created by Jason Santa Maria of Loud Room, who did a remarkable job of navigating my many quirks and translating my personal design aesthetic, such as it is. Many thanks also to Doug Wilson of Type Advisor: all-around coach, cheerleader, taskmaster, as well as editor, writer, interpreter, and sometimes scribe.
